The first round match up against last year’s premiers started well with a try by prop Tevita Veikoso after a strong build up from the forwards, which was converted by fly half Phil Loyden. Centre Luke Maybank scored next after scooping up a Colleagues dropped the ball and racing 50 metres to score another converted try. Loyden slotted another penalty goal before Colleagues scored a try of their own after prop Christian Venazi was yellow carded for infringements in the red zone, sending
Drummoyne into the break with a 17‐5 lead.
The first half was a dominant display of the Drummoyne forwards and Colleagues seemed to have little answer to our ball runners. They provided much sterner opposition in the second half and the home team’s discipline in our red zone allowed Colleagues to score another try, however even yellow cards to flanker Terry Langi and number eight Teddy Ratsaralafy, the defence held and Drummoyne even scored a try to reserve winger Lachlan Jackson and held on to record a 22‐10 victory.
Overall this was a fantastic result and the team showed plenty of heart to hold out a fast finishing Colleagues. Loyden was fantastic at fly‐half with directing the team and nullifying the rush defence. Ratsaralafy was immense in his first game playing back row for a long time and Langi put on his usual forceful display in attack and defence.
