After a strong start to the season and noting Balmain had not won a game this season, big things were expected this week but instead it was a close game and a nail biting finish.
With both sides taking time to settle into the game it was a dour first 10 minutes before Nick Stephenson stole a lineout on our 22‐metre line and this led to some strong forward play and gaining ground on the opposition.
Defence was the key in a tight game and great steals by flankers Oli Edwards and Corey Luyten took momentum away from Balmain on attack in our end of the field.
Ever physical forwards Teddy/ Robbie & No 8 Chris Sefo were working on hitting the line hard before Teddy copped a knock in the “goolies”, needing to be replaced while ‘they’ settled down.
After another of Oli’s steals, the back line received the ball and the ever‐dangerous centre Tiger Parker took the ball up before winger Joe Vunisa went scurrying down the sideline.
This led to a lineout win and No 10 Luke Giles picking up Tiger with a nice inside ball scoring under the posts. Half time Drummoyne 7 nil.
The break gave the lads time to reflect on the game and the call was to play at the opposition end and pick up the pace of the game as Balmain had been expertly slowing the game to suit their lack of fitness.
However, with the Balmain scrum dominating front row, our lads were forced to defend for much of the 2nd half, the team relied on our replacements to lift our performance & inject some vigour in defence and attack.
A very clever banana kick from replacement fullback Tim Stephenson gained some valuable ground and a chance to regroup after defending on our line for some time.
The opposition turned to their usual dirty play, constant complaining and repeatedly slowing the game before they eventually scoring off the back of a maul close to the try line.
The final score was close and this game will act as a reminder that there are no easy teams in this competition and we must turn up prepared to play at our best every week.
Nonetheless 4 wins from 4 games is a great start to the season and we sit in 2nd place, 1 point behind the Shammies.
Next up 3rd placed Mosman away.
