Drummoyne 30 Petersham 27
The return of Friday night rugby at Drummoyne Oval was a success with a large crowd in attendance for the top of the table clash to complete Round 1
Petersham came out firing and scored after we failed hold onto the ball from the Kick-off, with a simple pick’n’go try within the first 2 minutes. They converted the try and a penalty goal followed 5mins later and we were behind 10 nil – only 10 minutes into the game.
Uncharacteristically our lads were falling of tackles, and with penalties mounting against us, it looked like it was going to be a tough night.
With the ball being wet thank to a brisk dewy night, our lads set about changing the momentum, and it wasn’t long before our forwards started to dominate and Christian Vanezi was pulverising his much larger opposite prop in the scrum.
The plan was to kick into opposition territory and after a few under pressure kicks, fly half Luke Giles started to gain ground for our lads with some 60 metres kicks. A penalty followed from a scrum and Drummoyne were on the board after a penalty goal from Giles.
Sustained pressure from the Shammies at the kick off saw an uncharacteristic dropped ball from our captain, meaning we were yet again stuck defending our line. After a brilliant counter ruck the ball was cleared across our own posts with a cut out pass from Giles to Sefo, who put Joe into the clear. The crowd was on their feet and were assured a try as Tiger Parker and Tom Stephenson where tracking in support, only to have Joe pull up with a hamstring tear, hitting the deck and knocking the ball on.
The Petersham forwards were tiring quickly and our superior fitness was starting to show. Mid way through the 1st half a member of the Petersham coach unit was heard to say that Drummoyne are an “ill disciplined team” only to see their no.13 (who played 3rd grade for dirty reds last year) sent to the sin bin a few minutes later for laying on the ball after Luke Maybank was tackled.
With the opposition, a man down the Drummoyne forwards started taking the upper hand and fine runs straight up the middle by Robbie Glen, Chris Sefo and Teddy Raqtsararlafy had the opposition scattered all over the ground. Chris Sefo scored a nice try from some brilliant team phase play crashing over the line.
Half time 13-10 to Drummoyne
2st Half began with Petersham scoring as our backs were caught jamming in on Defence, with their winger braking away down the sideline, pulled down in a desperate cover tackle by our fullback, only to see a little pop up ball passed to their supporting fly half.
Score now 17-13 Petersham
Ill-discipline from Petersham allowed us to return to our game plan and Giles kicked another penalty soon after. From the next kick, off the Drummoyne forwards were working together, powering up the field and yet another dominant scrum mounting pressure & our ‘Pick’n’go’s’ working well to draw in defenders, the space out wide was open with Tiger Parker crossing over for a try near the posts and we were back in front.
As the match progressed both teams started to make replacements and Coach Dan asked Chris Sefo for a big 5 minutes before he was to be replaced. Chris responded & stepped up his ball carrying to crash over for his 2nd of the night for a demoralizing try and the Petersham heads were down.
Drummoyne were in front 30 to 20.
With a missed Penalty to push the game out of reach, Petersham regathered to score again and guaranteed a very tight finish with 7mins remaining.
This Drummoyne team are gaining confidence in themselves each week and it was this determination and being able to reply on their team mates that closed out the game for a fine win.
At the end of Round 1 we are 6 points clear at the top of the table and undefeated having beat each team in the competition.
3pts – Chris Sefo
2pts – Luke Giles
1pt – Robbie Glen
