2nd Grade vs Colleagues – Round 8 2017
Result: 19-7 loss
Tries: Niall McDermott
Conv: Josh Hayward
3 – Sam Fellows
2 – Luke Fletcher
1 – Sam Roach
This week was very disrupted as we had multiple players unable to make training and there were 3 changes to the team on the morning of the game. We were forced to defend for the first 15 minutes of the match and while the effort by the team was outstanding, the execution wasn’t great and a lot of covering tackles had to be made. The main issue however, was attack. Everything was off from the beginning, with dropped and overrun passes, turnovers at the ruck and everything in between. The team struggled to build more than a couple of phases at a time and went into half time behind 12-0.
The second half started better, however we still struggled to build phases and there were plenty more dropped balls and turnovers. Colleagues scored another try to take a 19-0 lead which finally kicked the team into gear as they increased the tempo and run the ball from everywhere. The team eventually built some momentum and a number of penalties from Colleagues allowed the team to get inside the opposition 22m zone and flanker Rabeeh Karaali put hooker Niall McDermott over the line for a converted try under the posts. The team looked a lot better in the last 10 minutes but couldn’t score another try to sneak in a bonus point.
This was a very disappointing result considering the team had been undefeated previously, however it’s extremely difficult to play well after so much disruption leading up to the game. Captain and number eight Sam Roach put his body on the line again and was one of the only forwards to really put in a good performance, fly-half Luke Fletcher’s defensive effort made up for a number of mistakes, while centre Sam Fellows had his best game in 2nd Grade, tackling everything that moved and taking he team forward when he had the opportunity.
